Accepting nominations for the 2018 Board Elections

Candidates are being sought for three board positions that are open as part of the rotational election cycle. Bios below are presented in alphabetical order.

Elections to be held on January 31, 2017

Individuals can self-nominate or candidates can be nominated by any member with a signed (e-mail is acceptable) agreement by the nominee. Nominations for the January election and people interested in the open board position should submit names on or before January 24, 2018, and should include a brief bio. Please outline why you are seeking a board position, your applicable experience, and how you will contribute to the board. Non-members are eligible to be nominated.

Candidates should have experience in at least one of these areas: Human resources, finance, education, community relations, fundraising, business, and/or have previous non-profit board experience.

All board members are expected to:

  • Be willing to make a commitment and actively lead/participate in board activities and Humane Society events and projects:
  • Be willing to raise funds or participate in fundraising.
  • Review and abide by by-laws.
  • Accept legal and Policy-setting responsibility for the agency.
  • Represent HSoMC to the staff, members, volunteers & the community.

Time commitment:

Estimate of an average of 10-15 hours monthly (not including projects or events)

  • Board Meetings: 4-6 hours
  • Committee Meetings: 2-4 hours
  • Occasional special events: 2-4 hours/year
  • General correspondence: 2-4 hours
  • Projects: Varies

Stacey Campbell

During my 31 years of marriage and raising two boys I’ve had the privilege of being a stay at home mom, which allowed me to volunteer my time in areas I felt best suited my strengths. My past volunteer positions in Brighton Michigan, where we lived for 27 years have been:  St. Patrick’s Church caregiver outreach program driver, my task was to take individuals with no other transportation available to and from their doctor appointments; Meals on Wheels driver; Big Brother Big Sister mentor; LACASA women and children’s resource center support staff; Office help for Love Inc., a Christian volunteer organization supporting individuals and families in need; and a Brighton Band Boosters volunteer and committee member. 

I have also provided crafty volunteer support on an ad-hoc basis as a decorating chairperson for the American Red Cross fundraiser; Brighton High School Senior All Night Party decorating chairperson (twice); Brighton High School Band 75 Anniversary decorating committee; and helped with the decorations and decorating at the HSOMC annual fundraiser in October 2017.

I am currently a volunteer at the HSOMC shelter walking dogs and doing laundry, as well as office help for the “Flood Recovery Project” in the United Way building.

I’m interested in being on the HSOMC committee board because I feel my different levels of experiences adds value to all the different components that represent the shelter and their needs.  I love all animals and support their causes when and where I can, I feel privileged to be able to help our four legged friends where they cannot help themselves both in the shelter and during fundraising for monetary comforts.  I appreciate this opportunity and welcome the challenges that come with working for a non-profit organization and all the people involved to improve the lives of our four legged families.

Tom Campbell

Currently serves as the Vice President of Business Development and Transactions for MidMichigan Health System in Midland Michigan.  In this role, I am responsible for all merger and acquisition and development of future business opportunities for the health system. I have been in this role since April 1, 2017.

Prior to this, I was Associate Vice President of Strategic Planning and Business Development and the University of Michigan Health System.   In that role I was responsible for all aspects of the UM Health System’s strategy development and execution, as well a business development for the health care enterprise of the University of Michigan.  I was at the University for 29 years, with various leadership positions throughout the years in finance, financial analysis, and contracting. 

While at the University of Michigan, I also held board positions on healthcare LLC and 501c3 ventures of the University and as well as a non-profit community organization.  These included: Physician Organization of Michigan; Physician Organization of Michigan-Accountable Care Organization; Pennant Health Alliance; Michigan Dialysis Services; and the Washtenaw Health Plan – a county based organization dedicated to serving the needs of the indigent in Washtenaw County. 

I’m interested in being on the HSOMC board because I love animals and want to support an organization that is supportive of them.   Being a non-kill entity is important for me and I want to be as supportive to that cause as I can, being on the board, or support in fundraising events.  My finance and business background and past board experiences may be useful to HSOMC and I am happy to serve if I can be of assistance.

Dana Courtine

I am an animal lover who would like an opportunity to apply my career expertise to an area where I can make a difference in the health and happiness of animals in the Midland County area.

My wife and I moved to Midland in July 2016.  One of the first things we did was begin volunteering at the HSOMC shelter as dog walkers and helping in the cat room.  In September, I began walking a dog from the shelter who soon found a permanent place in our home.  We are lifetime members of the Humane Society, we donate regularly, and we are passionate about doing everything we can to help animals lead normal lives in loving homes.

I would now like a new opportunity to help by acting as a Board Member for the Humane Society of Midland County.  I have a 23 year career at the Dow Chemical Company in Information Systems with specialized experience in leadership, program and project management, and managing operation budgets up to $12MM.

A Michigan licensed attorney, I am a Business Development Manager for one of the largest-Michigan based law firms. I bring to the board a basic understanding of Michigan law pertaining to animals, animal abuse, contract law and the legal system.

Since moving to Midland seven years ago I've had the opportunity to serve on a number of local non-profit boards and committees, including: Shelterhouse of Midland & Gladwin - board secretary, Ten16 Recovery Network - board chair, Women Lawyers Association of Michigan, Great Lakes Bay Region - board president, Midland County Bar Association - board president, a member of the Great Lakes Pride Festival Planning Committee and for two years I served as the volunteer-council director for Girls on the Run of Midland and Gladwin.

In all of my board positions, but especially with Girls on the Run, I have learned a great deal about balancing the goals and mission of an organization with the financial resources available. I've written and received grants from area organizations, and took Girls on the Run from a money-losing program to being self-sufficient in just one year. Through my volunteer work, and my career, I've formed valuable relationships with area foundations, law enforcement, court officers and community leaders.

I was appointed to the HSoMC board in mid-2017 and have spent my time on the board working with the fundraising committee, assisting with legal matters, and working with my fellow board members to define short and long term goals for the organization. I look forward to continuing this work and seeing HSoMC grow while still maintaining a no-kill philosophy and HSoMC's commitment to the animals and residents of Midland County.

During my tenure on the board I hope to help HSoMC be in a financial position to start a capital campaign for a new state-of-the-art shelter, hire additional staff to assist with fund development and marketing, and increase the number of animals HSoMC helps each year.

In my free time I enjoy running with my husband and our rescue dog, Clooney, reading, traveling, and spending time at home with our three rescue cats, Gus, Ivan and Tarzan.

 

Treasurer – Mark Lollar

Mark Lollar

I retired from Dow in 2015 after working more than 30 years as a finance professional.   My education includes an accounting degree from California State University, Fresno and a MBA from Central Michigan University.

I have prior experience as a board member with Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as five years experience as treasurer at Meridian Church of God.   In addition to serving on the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters, I was a volunteer Big Brother for 6 years.

My wife Leah and I reside in Sanford.  In addition to supporting HSoMC, we have been involved in parrot rescue for more than 6 years.  We currently have five rescued parrots and two rescued cats in our household.

 

 

 I have been active in a number of areas with HSoMC including:

  • Led the effort to structure land donation from Dow
  • Led the effort to write the business plan for HSoMC
  • Led the effort to implement the Fundraising Committee
  • Participated as an adhoc member of Building Committee
  • Participated as an adhoc member of the Grant Committee
  • Assisted with Ties & Tails Gala
  • Attended some events as either volunteer or to show board support

 

I am seeking re-election to continue the work I started when the board of directors sought my assistance in fall of 2016 to write a business plan for HSoMC.  During that project, I came to have a deeper appreciation for all HSoMC does to benefit the animals in our community.  The board subsequently recruited me as Treasurer in February 2017 and voted unanimously to have me join. 

I bring a strong understanding of business management, economics, and organizational design to HSoMC.  HSoMC is primed to move into another stage of evolution that includes organizational development and preparation for a capital campaign.  I have a shared vision with the other board members that HSoMC will soon be in a position to build a state of the art animal shelter that is truly representative of our community.  My skill set, passion, and temperament will be an asset to HSoMC on this journey.

Charlie – 9 year old beagle mix, Isabella County, 18 months when we adopted him

Bear (deceased at 15.5 years) – husky/shepard mix dropped off in the middle of the night at HSOMC in February when he was 4 weeks old. We adopted him seven days later after the stray hold was released.

PERSONAL STATEMENT

I would be honored to be on the HSoMC Board of Directors. The HSoMC does an incredible amount of good not only for Midland County, but for surrounding counties as well.  I think that 2018 will provide the opportunity to take HSoMC to the next level and I would like to be part of this exciting time. Given my previous Board of Director experience, my love for animals, and almost 30 years in the Midland Community, I believe that I could be an asset to the HSoMC Board of Directors. My goals for HSoMC include the process of fundraising, design and construction related to a new shelter in addition to ongoing education, fundraising and community outreach activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

RESCUE

I have always had rescue dogs. While I love all animals of all breeds and origins, I appreciated the value of a dog “in need” since I was 18 years old when I rescued my first dog who was born in the back woods of New Jersey. Since then, my husband and I have had eight dogs, all of whom were rescues. We currently have three dogs from various shelters and pet rescues in Michigan and Pennsylvania.

PROFESSIONAL

I am a Managing Counsel at The Dow Chemical Company where I have practiced business law, litigation and general corporate law for the past 20 years. Prior to this, I was a partner at the Midland law firm of Reicker, Van Dam, Looby & Barker.

RELEVANT VOLUNTEER WORK

Previous Board of Director experience includes Big Brothers Big Sisters of Midland County, Visiting Nurses Association, Youth Leadership Midland, Midland Bar Association and Hospital Advisory Board. I have also served as the Chairperson of Leadership Midland. My husband and I have been honored to be Co-Chairs of the Ties & Tails Gala benefiting HSoMC for the past two years. Since our move back to Midland, I have been volunteering at HSoMC as a dog walker when time allows.

Hillary Mellema

BIOGRAPHY

Hillary Mellema is a Marketing Professor at Saginaw Valley State University. She and her husband have rescued two dogs and three cats. Koda, a Great Lakes Mastiff Rescue dog, had behavioral issues that stemmed from abuse as a puppy. His care required behavioral training and special attention to surroundings and “spooky” stimuli throughout his life to deal with his fear aggression.

Dr. Mellema has a heart for the trouble-cases and senior animals. She has volunteered at HSoMC, Humane Animal Treatment Society in Mt. Pleasant, and Friends of the Animal Shelter in St. Joseph, Missouri. Because of her experience with a special-needs mastiff, Dr. Mellema specializes in caring for and guiding large breeds through their shelter experience.

Since the summer, Dr. Mellema has been assisting with long-term fundraising efforts and public relations for HSoMC. She began her efforts as a member and ad-hoc committee member. In August she was asked to fill a recent vacancy on the HSoMC Board of Directors. Since that time, Dr. Mellema has contributed to the BOD with her background in business management and marketing. She has assisted with the following:

  • Organization and promotion of a public relations event of HSoMC at the Larkin Beer Garden
  • Revisions and regular updates to the HSoMC website
  • Development of a fundraising campaign strategy for recruiting sustaining donors
  • Graphic Design
  • Facebook and Instagram Advertisements
  • Member E-newsletter
  • Cleaning shelter cat cages
  • Walking and training shelter dogs

As a learning experience for her students, Dr. Mellema provides hands-on marketing and advertising experience with local businesses. In the upcoming semester, students will be submitting competing marketing plans and campaign proposals to the HSoMC Board of Directors.

In the upcoming year, Dr. Mellema is looking forward to making a real impact in the community as the HSoMC Board of Directors works on becoming more financially sustainable, placing animals in the forever home that best matches their needs, involving the community of Midland County in helping HSoMC improve animal welfare.

STATEMENT

I am seeking a board position as a community member that has professional and personal experience in adoption, volunteering, and business. I have the background necessary to evaluate the financial sustainability of operations and make suggestions for improvement. My specific expertise is in education, marketing, advertising, public relations, and consumer behavior. I have found that Saginaw Valley students are eager to help organizations that serve animals. I will be leveraging this opportunity in the classroom.

I also have compassion and love for animals. I want to see the HSoMC organization thrive and grow to truly impact the Midland community and animals in need. I have a flexible schedule and will be able to meet the time and responsibility commitments of a position on the BOD.

Thank you for consideration for a position on the HSOMC Board of Directors.

The Rayce Family have been supporters, volunteers and fosters for the HSOMC since the doors opened. During this time, we have fostered (without exaggeration) hundreds of puppies, kittens, dogs, and cats. We do not shy away special needs, injured and have birthed multiple litters of critters in our home (and once in my truck!). We have a number of “failed fosters” as testament. These fosters include special needs fosters we adopted who have crossed the rainbow bridge. And yet, we welcome more. 

We admire their strength and perseverance of the HSOMC Staff to face the public and the sad parade of unfortunate animals who come through the doors. I hope they feel that our family can be called to help without hesitation.

After several years of extensive travel, I currently work for a contractor at Dow Chemical in the EH&S department. In addition to my regular job, our family started two businesses. You Barkin’ At Me, pet sitting and Cheeky Cheesecakes, which started at the Farmer's Market.

My work history includes:

  • Operations Manager: Payroll, Payroll taxes, Accounts Payable/Receivable.
  • Team Lead: Processing payroll, payroll taxes, deductions, garnishments for 23,000 associates for the largest funeral home company in the United States.
  • Transition Manager/Trainer: Determined scope of work for new projects, learned processes and software, and trained team to do work.

The Board faces the task of focusing on Budget, Building, Public, Resources and I’m in agreement. Additionally, I personally would like to see the staff receive more support and resources that would make it easier for them to do their job.

With my experience in foster program, I am keenly aware of the animals and people the staff deal with.  But they have the daily and nearly impossible task to appease the public, board and volunteers. Let’s sit down and get clearly defined expectations from BOTH sides that are attainable and agreed upon. As a member and supporter, I feel the HSOMC cannot afford to lose our key staff members.

I am passionate about this organization and have practical and realistic opinions to share.  

I’d welcome the opportunity to share them with you as a board member.
