Joyce Halstead

I’m interested in joining the board to participate/lead board activities/committees, provide historical perspective, and to support both board members and staff during this transitional period.  My long-term goal is to have a much needed new shelter.  My long involvement and support of the organization shows my passion for the mission!

Education:  graduated from Clare High School in 1961, placing third academically in a class of 106.  On my last job, I took several leadership classes at the college level. Active member since 2010, with various volunteer roles, including board member (secretary) in 2011.   I’ve always loved animals, always had dogs, then cats and horses as a youngster.  My interests are Animal Welfare/Rescue, Education, Project Management and Community Involvement.  Over the years, I’ve donated thousands of dollars in cash and supplies, sponsored Ties and Tails Gala , and helped at many fundraisers.

Now retired, my career has been mostly in customer service, with the last 16 years in supervision.

Related experience includes years of service on three other boards, serving as board secretary on two and as Vice President on another.

I have a long history with the Humane Society, starting in 2010, and years of experience volunteering for the organization.  Some of the positions I have filled include cleaning cat cages, washing dishes, laundry, general cleaning, organizing and increasing storage capacity, two plus years as Volunteer Coordinator for the shelter, registration for various events, serving on the Nominating and Building Committee, currently Chair of the Building Committee for a possible new shelter.

Since 2014 I’ve prepared spreadsheets of costs of all the spays and neuters done for our organization and related reports for the board.

My biggest contribution was as founder and funder of Rhoda’s Fund in 2014 and Papa’s Pups in 2016, our two programs offering financial assistance to low-income households for spaying and neutering their pets.  The programs were so successful that funding has been provided by the proceeds of the Endowment Fund since mid-2018.  I am still the Program Coordinator, receiving the applications, making the phone calls, scheduling surgeries, preparing and sending paperwork, maintaining ledgers, etc.
