The HSoMC Visits The Humane Society of the Delta

On March 29th, two HSoMC staff members and one volunteer hit the road with two empty vans, headed toward Helena, Arkansas, the home base for the Humane Society of the Delta (HSD). This shelter was brought to our attention several months before by The Bissell Pet Foundation noting their extreme need for getting dogs out and into loving homes. The basis of our trip was of course to save as many dogs as we possibly could, but to also bring some of our knowledge to their shelter, hoping to help them with some of the issues they face in their community.

We found a shelter overrun with well over 200 dogs and puppies, with kind-hearted people trying to do their best daily to help the animals in their community. We spent two days assisting them with photo taking, cleaning and discussing ways in which to bring their community together for the animals. We discussed instituting a spay/neuter program as well as many other things. They face horrors we can only imagine such as dog fighting and extreme animal abuse. We can only hope that the knowledge we brought with us will help them in the future.

In addition to this we also met well over 100 dogs, and choosing who got to come back with us was heartbreaking. In total we brought back 49 dogs and puppies. All have found their forever homes! We’d like to thank everyone who contributed to the trip and helped contribute toward heartworm treatments for many of the dogs. We hope to have a continued relationship with HSD in the future, helping even more dogs.

Foster Families Needed

As spring approaches, we are more in need than ever of dedicated foster families!

Foster families are needed for the following:
• Pregnant dogs and cats
• Orphaned puppies and kittens
• Dogs and cats healing from medical issues/surgeries
• Dogs and cats who need a break from shelter life and more!

Please email hsomcpets@gmail.com for more info on fostering and to find out how to sign up. Fosters are typically needed for 2-8 weeks and are never obligated for financial costs.

Settee & Badger – An Unlikely Bond

Many will remember that back in November we took in several dogs from a hoarding case. These dogs have been in foster care, where they will stay while we await court proceedings to finish. Settee, the English Setter pictured here, has been in foster care (not available!) with our director this whole time. Due to the court proceedings, we are not legally able to have her spayed just yet.

You may also remember that over a month ago we welcomed a late arrival of several dogs from Arkansas, including a litter of puppies who didn’t have a mother and were not thriving. Our director took them into foster and sadly all but one lost their battle. She had been diligently bottle feeding the baby (lovingly named Badger) but noticed that Badger was getting quite plump. During this time, Settee took a liking to Badger and began snuggling and mothering her and would even let her nurse. What a surprise we got tonight when we found that Settee, who didn’t give birth to this baby and is not pregnant, had milk come in and is now nursing Badger! Dogs are incredible animals and we are just in awe of this strong relationship they’ve formed. Badger is now adoptable and will be ready to head to her forever home soon!
